SPECIES INFORMATION:
The Orange Bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) is one of Australia’s most endangered birds. This parrot only reaching a small size of 20cm long and is endemic to South Australia. It is a migratory bird and the whole population migrate over Bass Strait to breed in South West Tasmania. This species used to be more widespread however due to increasing habitat loss it is now classified as ‘Critically Endangered’. There are approximately 50-250 birds left in the wild with further populations in a captive breeding program.
IDEAS BEHIND THE ART WORK:
The work illustrates the ideas of cycles and on broader term about the cycles of nature. The single coloured ‘Orange Bellied Parrot’ in the piece juxtaposes to the absence of colours in the adjacent birds in flight. The mass flock of spiraling birds is representative of their migration, the birds become smaller and smaller as they circle inwards towards the bike.
